Mobile range comes to Melrose Police
Written by Daniel DeMaina
Thursday, 07 February 2008

Melrose - As the officer enters the bank, he sees the robber holding a gun to a hostage’s head. Does he hold his position and call for backup, or take immediate action? Deciding he has a clear shot at the robber, the officer takes aim and shoots.

Then, the lights come up in the trailer. The officer examines his accuracy and reviews his decision with the range instructor.

In addition to housing a standard, three-bay firing range, the trailer — from Blue Line Corp. of Beverly — has a wall-sized movie screen that plays over 400 scenarios that test not only officers’ marksmanship, but their discretion and on-scene assessment capabilities.

Paul Polonsky, a former Ipswich police officer who started Blue Line Corp. four years ago, said the movie scenarios go beyond requiring officers to shoot either their sidearm or a non-lethal weapon. While some scenarios have suspects showing a gun, others have suspects without guns or suspects who say they will surrender peacefully.

“It’s also training for verbal commands,” Polonsky said. “It’s a very good training tool in regards to, you saw this, OK, you should be on the radio saying ‘send more backup’ or ‘there’s people injured.’ It’s not only shoot or don’t shoot. There are many other good things you get out of it. You actually have to see it to appreciate it.”

No vest on stabbed officer
Written by PATRICK JOHNSON
Thursday, 07 February 2008

SPRINGFIELD - Springfield police officer Kevin Fitzgerald was not wearing a protective vest when he was stabbed in the chest today, but police officials said a bullet-proof vest may not have made much of a difference against a knife.

The vests are designed to absorb the energy of a speeding bullet, but in some instances, vests have been found inadequate to stop sharp, pointed blades, officials said.

Fitzgerald was stabbed this morning at 47 Knollwood St. as he and another officer responded to an ambulance call for a 14-year-old boy who refused to get out of bed.

The boy lunged at Fitzgerald with a 4-inch kitchen paring knife, striking him in the chest. The knife went in up to the handle, police said.

State trooper has inseperable bond with her K9
Written by SUSAN LaHOUD

ATTLEBORO -- Watching Xena, a 60-pound German shepherd, running friskily in the snow at Capron Park recently, one wouldn't necessarily suspect that she is one-half of a crime-fighting team.

State Police Trooper Kathleen Sampson and her partner Xena pose for a recent photo at Capron Park in Attleboro. (Staff photo by Mark Stockwell)But when her human partner, Massachusetts State Trooper Kathleen Sampson, issues the command "work," the canine races to the door of Sampson's cruiser and it's all business. The same holds true when Sampson starts donning her uniform at home: The dog prepares for duty.

The duo is together 24-7, at work and in down time, creating a unique bond between the 7-year-old dog and the 16-year veteran trooper.

Sampson, who is assigned to the State Police K9 Unit East, which includes Bristol and Norfolk counties, has been working with K9s as part of her career for 13 years. Xena is her second dog. Her previous one, a German shepherd named Rico, died due to health issues. Troopers get to name their dogs, and Sampson said she likes "the two syllable, Italian-type names."
