BUPD takes 'action' over Oct. collision
Written by Matt Negrin
Tuesday, 04 December 2007

Boston University's police chief said Friday he has taken "appropriate action" following the completion of the investigation of an officer who struck a student with his cruiser on Commonwealth Avenue more than a month ago.

"The appropriate action has been taken in this matter," said BU Police Department Chief Thomas Robbins, who would not comment further on the report completed last week.

The report will not be made public because it is the result of a department internal investigation, Robbins said.

The chief's comments are the first made by the department since the Oct. 23 collision, in which School of Law graduate student Yeon Lee was struck by the patrol car on the outbound side of Commonwealth Avenue.

Before striking Lee, the car made a left U-turn across the MBTA tracks near the BU Central T stop, according to witnesses and a Boston Police Department report. The turn is illegal for non-emergency vehicles; witnesses said the cruiser's sirens were not turned on.

Lee said the patrol car was traveling "a little fast," according to the BPD report.

The cruiser struck Lee's left hip as she walked across the street from Marsh Plaza. After she was hit, she lay in the street and was helped by the officer and two nearby students - College of General Studies sophomore Elizabeth Brennan and graduate law student Ross Bul.

The victim was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital where she underwent X-rays the next day.

New Falmouth chief faces challenges
Written by Aaron Gouveia
Tuesday, 04 December 2007

FALMOUTH — The phrases "clean slate" and "fresh start" were commonplace yesterday as Anthony Riello was officially sworn in as Falmouth's new chief of police.

Riello, 57, replaced David Cusolito, who held the position for 11 years but announced his retirement following a period of departmental strife. Cusolito's term included a total of nine employee discrimination complaints filed with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination and numerous disciplinary cases. And, the still-unsolved murder of Shirley Reine in 2005 prompted two years of public scrutiny of the department that the chief could never escape.

Riello served as chief of police in Pittsfield for the past 11 years and is the incoming president of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association.

Riello took the job in Falmouth despite the department's recent troubles because he was looking for a new challenge, he said.

"There are issues here, but there were issues in Pittsfield and every other police department," Riello said. "The key is to work together to solve those issues."

He called the Falmouth department "very solid."

That message seems to have resonated with some of the officers.

Boston police reloaded the command staff yesterday, promoting about a dozen officers.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis honored the new brass and their families at the Detective Rating, a promotional ceremony held at Teacher’s Union Hall yesterday.

Those promoted to detective included, Capt. Mark P. Hayes, Lt. Arthur G. Torigian, Sgt. Daniel P. Duff, Sgt. John J. Fitzgerald and Sgt. Matthew F. Whalen. Another nine officers were promoted to lieutenant or sergeant.

“This is another in an important recent series of new assignments and promotions that represent the future of the Boston Police Department,” Davis said.
