Boston police reloaded the command staff yesterday, promoting about a dozen officers. Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis honored the new brass and their families at the Detective Rating, a promotional ceremony held at Teacher’s Union Hall yesterday. Those promoted to detective included, Capt. Mark P. Hayes, Lt. Arthur G. Torigian, Sgt. Daniel P. Duff, Sgt. John J. Fitzgerald and Sgt. Matthew F. Whalen. Another nine officers were promoted to lieutenant or sergeant. “This is another in an important recent series of new assignments and promotions that represent the future of the Boston Police Department,” Davis said. BOSTON -- U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan is handing out just over $1 million to 11 cities across the state in an effort to stem gang violence.
The Project Safe Neighborhood and Anti-Gang Initiative grant funds will be used to support law enforcement and community or faith based programs.
Sullivan said the money will help combat crime and gang violence across Massachusetts. Cities sharing in the grant include Boston, Brockton, Fall River, Haverhill, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, Lynn, New Bedford, Springfield and Worcester.
Officials said previous rounds of funding from the Project Safe Neighborhood program have been used to increase officer training, prevention and intervention programming and gun violence reduction strategies.
More than $1.5 billion has been committed nationwide since 2001. |

Police unions from more than a dozen communities in Eastern Massachusetts have decided that, when it comes to negotiations, there's more power in numbers. The local unions have formed a coalition and have begun pooling their resources and know-how in hopes that the collective would put them in position to better negotiate employment contracts for their 800 members. The move occurs as municipal labor contracts are increasingly difficult to negotiate and many have had to be settled in arbitration, where preparation and presentation can help win a dispute. "Now, police unions from all these different cities and towns can come together as one and share experience, knowledge, and information," said Newton police Officer Jay Babcock, who is president of Newton's patrolmen's union and a member of the Massachusetts Municipal Police Coalition's board of directors. The new group, which include police unions from Andover, Arlington, Belmont, Cambridge, Framingham, Lawrence, Lexington, Marlborough, Medford, Natick, Newton, Somerville, and Wayland, will also speak up collectively on certain personnel grievances - as it did recently when it protested the firing of a Lexington police officer. |
