LAWRENCE — A lengthy 2006 undercover drug investigation in the Lawrence area netted 20 arrests, the seizure of 17 kilograms of cocaine, 500 grams of heroin, 64 pounds of marijuana, $47,000 cash, 10 vehicles and a handgun. For their work with the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Strike Force, nine city detectives were among those who received the Massachusetts State Police Superintendent's Unit Citation during a presentation at state police headquarters in Framingham last week. The investigation involved nine months of surveillance identifying participants locally, as well as a larger network operation throughout the eastern seaboard, southwestern United States and Mexico. The strike force also included agents and officers from the Drug Enforcement Administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Internal Revenue Service, Massachusetts State Police, Massachusetts Transit Police, the state Department of Correction and the Rowley Police Department. Lawrence officers honored at the presentation were: Lt. James Fitzpatrick, Sgt. Mark Ciccarelli, Sgt. Joseph Beaulieu and detectives Robert LeFebre, Angel Mejia, Michael Montecalvo, David Moynihan, Mark Panagiotakos and Mark Rivet. State troopers recognized included the late Lt. Gregory Dern, sergeants James Bazzinotti, William Canty and Robert McCarthy, and troopers Mark Blanchard, Jason Conant, Stephen Gondella, Daniel McGinn, Kevin O'Neil and Patrick Silva. Lt. John Geibel of the Rowley Police Department was among the local officers honored. "This was a strike task force put together for this particular investigation," police Chief John Romero said. He said the collaborative efforts of all of the officers and agents involved resulted in a successful operation and led to the awarding of the unit citation.
