BUPD takes 'action' over Oct. collision PDF Print E-mail

Boston University's police chief said Friday he has taken "appropriate action" following the completion of the investigation of an officer who struck a student with his cruiser on Commonwealth Avenue more than a month ago.

"The appropriate action has been taken in this matter," said BU Police Department Chief Thomas Robbins, who would not comment further on the report completed last week.

The report will not be made public because it is the result of a department internal investigation, Robbins said.

The chief's comments are the first made by the department since the Oct. 23 collision, in which School of Law graduate student Yeon Lee was struck by the patrol car on the outbound side of Commonwealth Avenue.

Before striking Lee, the car made a left U-turn across the MBTA tracks near the BU Central T stop, according to witnesses and a Boston Police Department report. The turn is illegal for non-emergency vehicles; witnesses said the cruiser's sirens were not turned on.

Lee said the patrol car was traveling "a little fast," according to the BPD report.

The cruiser struck Lee's left hip as she walked across the street from Marsh Plaza. After she was hit, she lay in the street and was helped by the officer and two nearby students - College of General Studies sophomore Elizabeth Brennan and graduate law student Ross Bul.

The victim was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital where she underwent X-rays the next day.
