SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A search committee says Springfield's acting police commissioner and two police administrators with Connecticut ties are finalists for the permanent position.

The committee's chairman says a fourth candidate chose to withdraw.

In addition to Acting Commissioner William Fitchet, the finalists are Chatham, Massachusetts, Police Chief Mark Pawlina and Patrick Ridenhour, assistant deputy chief in Waterbury, Connecticut.

Pawlina was an officer for more than two decades and acting chief in Hartford, Connecticut, before becoming Chatham's chief in December 2005.

The Republican newspaper of Springfield had pressed the search committee to release the finalists' names under state public records law.

Officials said closed-door interviews started Friday, and public interviews are expected to be scheduled soon.
