Position Responsibilities
The Campus Police Department serves Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges. Officers provide a safe and secure environment for the college communities; conduct patrols to respond to emergencies, and provide services; enforce safety regulations, state laws, and College rules and regulations; identify safety hazards and conditions; prepare incident reports and related written communication. Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid Massachusetts driver's license, and be eligible for appointment under Chapter 22c, Section 63 as a special state police officer. To be so warranted, candidates must have an Associate's degree or higher in CRIMINAL JUSTICE and have successfully completed a Massachusetts reserve and intermittent police academy. Alternately, candidates may qualify with a full-time Massachusetts campus or municipal academy.
Preference is given to candidates with prior experience working in the public safety/police field. Must have, or be able to obtain, CPR/AED and First Responder certification. Candidates must be available to work nights, weekends and holidays. Candidates must submit three letters of reference.
Information about the Department
The Campus Police Department is an accredited progressive community policing agency with strong service orientation. Successful applicants must be able to work with diverse constituencies and be sensitive to multicultural issues.
Work Schedule
Officers provide coverage 24 hours/day, 365 days/year. Officers must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Officers undergo a 10-week field training program rotating through the shifts to learn the skills necessary to be successful. Following FTO, specific campus and shift assignment is based on a seniority shift bid. However, officers are assigned to all three campuses for cross-campus coverage as needed.
Screening Process
Eligible candidates will undergo a screening process including a credential review, interview, personal and criminal background check, and reference check. The Department encourages qualified candidates to apply, even if they have applied previously. The College offers a comprehensive benefits package. These positions will be open until filled. The hiring process is expected to take approximately 4-6 weeks, depending on the applicant pool. Applications will not be rejected due to unintentional errors, and applicants may ask to correct errors provided the process has not closed before they or the department discovers the error.
Mount Holyoke College is an equal opportunity institution, committed to diversity in education and employment.

I find the whole wave of merging departments very interesting. On the UP side, it gives the cops a little more feeling of job security (I like to THINK) but on the down side it kind of

I'm trying really hard to think of a down side. I'm sure there has to be a few, but more opportunity for OT/Details, more variety of assignments, the joy of not having to know the entire other campuses since you'd never work alone but with someone FROM that campus, smaller departments with low budgets and lack of enthusiasm for policing suddenly having an uptick in training, pay and equipment.

Plus I would think that, although you have to bend to a specific college admin to some degree, you would have an essentially across the board approach to policing without each college president telling you how it's done. If they agree to have ONE department for each school, they MUST realize that you can't have each officer have a different appr...

I can't go on with that last one. I'm getting sick.

That would be amazing. Looking at the website it looks like a totally squared away and professional agency. I hope this is true and I hope that they continue to obtain the training and EQIPMENT they need and that no college administration stands in the way.

I have never met any of them nor have I visited the department, but as someone who is passionate about the job, I must say I'm very impressed by the progress t
