LAWRENCE, Mass. -
A man accused in connection with a $1.5 million food stamp and money laundering scheme has cut off his court-ordered monitoring device and fled, state police said.

Troopers are looking for Martin Santiago, who failed to appear Thursday in Essex Superior Court for the start of his trial. He was out on $75,000 cash bail and was wearing a GPS monitoring bracelet, which was cut off around 6 a.m. Thursday.

Santiago was arrested in 2015 and charged with trafficking $1.5 million in EBT benefits at his three stores in Lawrence, state police said.

State police have a warrant for his arrest.

Santiago is from the Dominican Republic, is not a U.S. citizen and is fluent in Spanish. Troopers described him as Hispanic, with black hair and brown eyes. He is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs about 190 pounds.

Santiago has used the aliases Mark Santiago and Martin Billone Santiago in the past, troopers said.

Anyone with information about Santiago is asked to call Massachusetts State Police at 1-800-KAPTURE (1-800-527-8873).
